Elevate your brainstorming with sticky notes

by Kimball Bullington

"Incorporating sticky notes into brainstorming isn’t a new idea. 3M—inventor of Post-it Notes and the entire sticky note industry—suggests as much, calling the combination “brainstorming 101.” However, the practice of combining individual and group brainstorming facilitated by sticky notes—called a “sticky storm”—changes the dynamics of brainstorming and improves it by addressing several problems generally associated with brainstorming.

For example, individual brainstorming with sticky notes—when team members write their ideas on sticky notes prior to a meeting—reduces social loafing (when someone doesn’t work as hard because they are in a group) and production blocking (when one team member prevents others from contributing ideas) while encouraging more creative solutions.

Sticky storms take you several levels above brainstorming by linking process improvement tools—such as individual and group brainstorming, affinity diagrams, interrelationship diagrams and cause and effect diagrams—to facilitate idea generation, selection and refinement."
